Όπως την ξέρουμε, η βρωμιά είναι ουσιαστικά ακαταστασία.
Η απόλυτη ακαθαρσία δεν υφίσταται παρά μόνο στην οπτική του παρατηρητή.
Εάν αποφεύγουμε την ακαθαρσία δεν είναι εξαιτίας ενός σφοδρού φόβου και ακόμη λιγότερο εξαιτίας ενός δέους ή ενός ιερού τρόμου.
Ούτε οι ιδέες μας μπορούν να εξηγήσουν το ευρύ φάσμα των συμπεριφορών μας σχετικά με την καθαριότητα ή την αποφυγή της ακαθαρσίας.
Η ακαθαρσία προσβάλλει την τάξη.

saliva

menstrual blood

semen

dust

pieces of skin

teeth

If we shun dirt, it is not because of craven fear, still less dread of holy terror.
Nor do our ideas about disease account for the range of our behaviour in cleaning or avoiding dirt.
Dirt offends against order.
Eliminating it is not a negative movement, but a positive effort to organise the environment.» *
